BLACKBENDER

Darkness, Defined / The Authentic 1960s Fuzz Experience

1. Design Philosophy

"Italian inspiration, British soul, Spanish construction. The Blackbender is our ode to the original Italian circuit, but with an evolution necessary for the contemporary musician. Do not use this pedal to blend into the background. It is designed to make your guitar the absolute protagonist of the mix. Use it with confidence and let the notes die with that imperfect sustain that only real germanium can provide." — Antonio Martos, CEO & Lead Designer

2. General Description

Congratulations! You now possess a piece of tonal history. The Blackbender is an evolved replica of the legendary V828, originally manufactured in Pescara, Italy—considered the heart of the psychedelic and garage rock sound of the 1960s. You hold in your hands the perfect balance between aggression and musicality.

While vintage pedals are slaves to temperature, the Blackbender grants you total mastery over the atomic structure of your sound. We haven't just cloned the tone; we have unlocked its behavior. It is the authentic '60s fuzz experience, optimized for the demands of the modern stage.

3. Main Features

  • Class A Signal Architecture: A circuit based on the architecture of the legendary Vox Tone Bender (1967) with two-stage gain optimization.

  • Selected NOS Transistors: A matched selection of New Old Stock Germanium. Each transistor has been individually tested in our lab for leakage and gain ($h_{FE}$) to guarantee unsurpassed harmonic stability.

  • Interactive Dynamics (Volume Cleanup): Unlike modern fuzzes, the Blackbender is a living device. If you set the Attack to maximum and lower your guitar's volume to 7 or 8, you will discover a clean, bright tone that "bites" if you play hard. This is the best-kept secret of the '60s guitar heroes. (Note: For this interaction to be perfect, the Blackbender must be the first pedal in your signal chain).

  • Premium Switching: True Bypass via a high-resistance footswitch with silver contacts, ensuring absolute transparency when the effect is disengaged.

4. Dynamic Controls and Tonal Sculpting

You don’t need more than three controls to conquer the stage:

  • VOLUME (Level): A compensated passive output attenuator. It features a massive output capacity of up to 3V peak-to-peak, ideal for saturating tube input stages.

Tone Tip: The Blackbender sounds best when adjusted slightly above the volume of your clean amplifier ("Unity Gain"). This pushes your amplifier's tubes directly into the territory of ecstasy.

  • ATTACK: Saturation control for the second stage. It governs the amount of gain and sustain, with a massive range from +15dB to +55dB.

  • BIAS (The Mood Control): This is the most critical knob in your arsenal. It adjusts the external voltage between -4.5V and -9V at the collector of the second transistor (Q-Point), allowing you to navigate the pedal's emotional states:

    • Clockwise (High Voltage): Open sound with maximum headroom and a creamy, crystalline sustain.

    • Central Position (The Sweet Spot): The classic Italian Bender response: aggressive, bright, and cutting. The exact point where the pedal "bites" through the mix.

    • Counter-Clockwise (The Dying Battery): Entering the territory of Velcro textures and gated sounds. The signal collapses artistically, ideal for garage rock riffs.

Doctor’s Note: "The Bias doesn't just adjust voltage; it adjusts attitude. Use it to compensate for stage heat or to find that 'broken' tone that only germanium can offer."

5. Technical Specifications

  • Topology: Class A Analog Fuzz (V828 / Vox Tone Bender 1967 Architecture).

  • Transistors: NOS Germanium (Individually tested).

  • Input/Output: 1/4” (6.3mm) Neutrik® high-fidelity jacks with reinforced chassis.

  • Power (Supply): 9V DC Center Negative. (Important: The Blackbender uses a reverse polarity circuit typical of PNP transistors. It includes an internal audiophile-grade voltage inverter so you can connect it to any standard power supply without risk of short circuit).

  • Power (Purist): To obtain the original "sag," use exclusively 9V Zinc-Carbon batteries (the cheapest on the market). They deliver the exact voltage and resistance the circuit needs to sound 100% authentic.

  • Current Draw: < 10 mA (Ultra-low, optimized for prolonged battery use).

  • Chassis: Die-cast aluminum with a raw finish.

  • Assembly: Hand-built in Spain.
